You can get a great number of addresses for Campings, B&Bs, Guest Houses, Hotels or Self-Catering from the Scottish Tourist Board (STB).

To see the most different places in a minimum of time, use private B&Bs for 2-3 nights and then head on to the next place. If you already know Scotland, or if you just have too big a family to drag around, rent a cottage in some quiet place for 2-4 weeks and make your excursions from there.

Prices reach from £10 to £25 for private B&Bs, Hotels and Guest houses are generally more expensive. Self-catering is possible anywhere from £95 to £400 per week depending on the luxury you want. In many places you can not only rent cottages but also caravans.

Here are some places I have been and which pleased me very much.

Although not far from the main road (A859), the place is very quiet and lays at the end of an impasse. Very nice rooms and good food. 5 minutes walk to the center of Stornoway, 10 minutes to the ferry terminal.

After having missed the ferry to North Uist
and 2 hours of searching, we found this
beautiful place at the end of a small road.
A warm welcome, a very quiet place, a
beautiful park in front of the house, all added
up to a place where we will surely come back
for more than one night.

Situated near the town center on the main road, parking might be difficult and on weekends there might be some noise in the street, but the welcome is very warm, the food is good and the rooms are fine.

Hotels and Guest Houses

Poolewe Hotel, Poolewe, Ross-shire

Map: Ordnance Survey Landranger #19
Grid reference: NG 856809

Located centraly, yet 100m away from the main road (A832) on the B8057, near the shops and only 10 minutes from Inverewe Gardens (alternative) It is not as fancy as the Pool House Hotel, but cheaper and friendlier especially if you have children (not alowed under 14 years in the restaurant of the Pool House Hotel!)

Strathaird House, Isle of Skye

Map: Ordnance Survey Landranger #32
Grid reference: NG 551179

Very secluded on the B8083 from Broadford to Elgol, near Kilmarie. Jenny and John are fine hosts and Jenny's cooking is excellent. The place is ideal for walking and climbing the Black Cuillin. You can also take boat trips from Elgol to Loch Coruisk in the heart of the Black Cuillin.
